Gwendolyn and Mercedes

After doing that Thor picture, I couldn't stop thinking about Odin Sphere! It's been a couple of years since I drew these characters, but it still feels like the game just came out yesterday, heh. Tried a different painting style and it took a long time to kind of work it out. Looking back at the rough version now, I liked Mercedes' face more on the sketch! I guess I'm still trying to find 'my' Mercedes, since she looks different every time I draw her.

Thor

It occurred to me that Odin Sphere and Thor are both based on Norse mythology, and I started to imagine what Thor would look like in the Odin Sphere game.

I love the character designs in all of Vanillaware's games, because of the push and pull they do with body proportions. They do this thing with a lot of the "heavy" fighters in Odin Sphere where the characters are wide and bulky on the top, but with tiny hips and legs. It's a really cool aesthetic.

There's Odin's design from the game on the left. On the right is Thor the Mighty Avenger, which I based my Thor's design on. It's an awesome miniseries illustrated by Chris Samnee... forever the Thor of my heart!

BACK ON BLOGGER

Hi - it's been 3 years, but I'm going to start posting on here again! I've been putting some art on my tumblr account, but I miss the intimacy of blogger. I'll try to post more process-related type things here, as tumblr is more suited for showcase I think.

Some updates on where I am - MICA didn't work out, so I'm in Canada at the University of Toronto now! I'm double majoring in Cognitive Science and East Asian studies (odd combination, I know).

My boyfriend had his birthday yesterday. He's all the way in Taiwan right now for the summer, so I emailed this to him as a gift. This is sort of a gag that pokes fun at our relative sizes - he's around 40cm taller than me!

May-June dump

Gwah! Apologies for disappearing for the past two months. You see, dear China has blocked blogger, and I couldn't figure out how to post with this proxy thing, so I kind of gave up for a bit. But I think it should work now. XD Time to get to spamming the blog with art.

Done with gouache. It's so so fun to work with and it's my new favorite traditional media.

I also got myself an account on pixiv so I can indulge in gorgeous Japanese illustration; was then inspired to draw some anime-style pieces and upload some pictures of my own.
